Chaylse City
Painter, Photoshop
January 2008

Fishing boats float in the shallow seas around Chaylse's famed "Pillar City"... This is the capital city in a story I wrote WAY back in high school. The idea came back to me recently, and I started doing concept sketches for this city, nestled in the cracks and crevices of giant stone pillars.

Based on a pencil sketch, the drawing was painted in Painter, and photographic elements were incorperated in Photoshop. I used a lot of antique naval paintings for references. The original idea for the city came from my memories of the Canadian Maritimes, where I was born, and the precipitous and gorgeous rock formations that lean out over violent seas. (Anyone out there whos been to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland will agree with me that they contain some of the most stunning landscapes in the world ). So for the landscape itself, I looked at pictures from the Bay of Fundy, as well as the coast of Laborador... although the color of the rocks came from Dover.
